It Takes a Village
Building the Future of Kids KottageOur Vision
Every child deserves a safe place to go when the adults and circumstances around them are in crisis.
When families face overwhelming challenges, children are often the ones most affected. We envision a future where every child has access to a safe, nurturing environment that provides stability, care, and protection during some of life's most difficult moments.
The expansion project is our response to that vision.
Families across Edmonton and Northern Alberta are increasingly experiencing challenges that place children at risk of instability, trauma, or unnecessary involvement in more intensive intervention systems.
At the same time, demand for safe, short-term stabilization and support services continues to exceed available capacity.
Our expansion strategy is designed so that more children can access safe care when they need it most, while creating a sustainable, community-based solution that strengthens outcomes for children, families, caregivers, and government partners.
Current Priority
As part of our long-term vision to create more safe places for children during times of family crisis, Kids Kottage is focused on developing the next "kottage" in our growing network of child stabilization and crisis care services.
This next location represents an important step in expanding access to safe, home-like care environments where children can experience stability, support, and protection when they need it most.
Planning and zoning compatibility
Space for the building, parking and outdoor programming
Access to public transit and transportation
Safety, privacy and compatibility with surrounding uses
Availability of municipal services
Environmental and geotechnical conditions
Development costs and timelines
Purchase or lease terms
Capital funding and financing considerations
Long-term certainty of tenure
These criteria reflect the site considerations established through the Expansion Task Force’s land search and review process.
Designing Around the Needs of Children
At the same time, we are working with S2 Architecture to translate our program model into a thoughtful, purpose-built environment.
The design process is considering how spaces connect and function together so the future facility can support safe care, effective programming and the day-to-day needs of children and staff. Work completed to date includes early planning discussions, space-planning concepts, diagrams showing the relationships between program areas, and a preliminary floor plan.
Design work is continuing alongside the site search, with an exterior concept rendering expected by the end of September.
